Congratulations Rajeev Ram (CRC member) and Barbora Krejcikova (Czech Republic)! They are the 2019 Australian Open mixed doubles champions. They defeated Australia’s Astra Sharma and compatriot John-Patrick Smith in the mixed doubles final at the Australian Open tennis championships in Melbourne, Australia, early Sunday, Jan. 27, 2019.
Rajeev grew up playing tennis at CRC. He won the 1999 IHSAA boys tennis singles title for Carmel High School when he was sophomore. He delayed his enrollment at the University of Illinois until January 2003 so that he could continue to play tennis as an amateur on the pro circuit. During this one semester at Illinois he won the national doubles title with Brian Wilson and helped the Fighting Illini to undefeated (32-0) and the win the 2003 NCAA team championship. Craig Tiley the CEO of Tennis Australia and the Australian Open Tournament Director, was his U of I coach.
He won the Mixed Doubles silver medal with Venus Williams at the Rio Olympics 2016 and reached the final of the US Open with Coco Vandeweghe in the same year. Raj has claimed sixteen ATP doubles titles in his career, with several different partners. His career-high singles ranking is world no. 56, achieved in April 2016. He reached as high as world no. 11 in doubles in March 2017
His proud parents are Raghav and Sushma Ram. He married Zainab Saqib in 2016.
